Part of: Legna Rodríguez Iglesias Tour Spanish poetry workshop: Translating Jamila Medina Ríos with Serafina Vick and poet Legna Rodríguez Iglesias

Poetry Translation Centre
London

Jamila Medina Ríos is a Cuban poet, essayist, short story writer and currently the poetry editor at one of Cuba’s largest publishing houses, Ediciones Uniones. Jamila’s award-winning poetry has been published in Cuba, Mexico, Spain and Puerto Rico and she is considered one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Cuban poetry. We will be translating her work alongside Cuban poet Rodríguez Iglesias and her translator Serafina Vick.

This workshop is part of a new initiative at the Poetry Transition Centre where we ask our touring poets to come in and lead a workshop alongside a translator to introduce us to a poet from their culture that has been a big influence on their writing. This is a great way to get a better understand the network of influences and shifting currents in another culture. The poet we will be translating will be announced soon.

Legna Rodríguez Iglesias will be in the UK to launch her collection ‘A little body is many parts’ published by the Poetry Translation Centre and Bloodaxe Books. This workshop will be an opportunity to work alongside Legna and her bridge-translator Serafina Vick.

The translator Serafina Vick is passionate about spreading the work of contemporary Cuban poets, and introduced Legna Rodríguez Iglesias to the PTC via a series of workshops in 2017-18 lead by the poet Clear Pollard, who said Legna’s work reminded her of the many exciting poets of her generation in the UK like Heather Phillipson or Jack Underwood.
