Mexican Poets’ Tour Launch Party
Start date -
Location - The Photographers' Gallery
Three leading Mexican poets - Coral Bracho, David Huerta and Víctor Terán - read in Spanish and Zapotec alongside their poet-translators Katherine Pierpoint, Jamie McKendrick and David Shook.
2010 is the bicentennial of Mexico's independence movement and the one-hundredth anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. To mark the occasion our Mexican Poets' Tour introduced three leading poets from Mexico to new audiences, visiting literature festivals and venues around the UK. Lively and entertaining readings revealed the dynamic nature of the poets' culture and their rich literary tradition in which poetry plays a prominent role.
We made videos of the poets reading at The Cervantes Institute and Crispin Hughes and Travis Elborough took photographs throughout the tour, so please do check out our Mexican Media.
Two of the poets, Coral Bracho (translated by Katherine Pierpoint and Tom Boll) and David Huerta (translated by Jamie McKendrick) are at the forefront of Spanish-language poetry in Mexico. The third, Víctor Terán (translated by David Shook), writes in Isthmus Zapotec, one of Mexico's many indigenous languages, whose fascinating culture is little known in the UK. All six poets took part in the tour.
