The Poetry Translation Centre is very proud to partner with the Aké Arts and Books Festival to present a special series of translation workshops on the Nigerian languages of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

The Poetry Translation Centre is very proud to partner with the Aké Arts and Books Festival to present a special series of translation workshops on the Nigerian languages of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

Tbe workshops will be taking place throughout the day on Thursday October 22nd online and you can attend all three from anywhere in the world.

Yoruba Poet 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Túbọ̀sún Ọládàpọ̀ is a Nigerian poet, playwright and radio-personality known as ‘the loquacious parrot’. He also has his own record label Olatubosun Records that ends and promotes the work of indigenous-language artists and folk poets across the Yorùbá speaking parts of Africa. This is the PTC’s second workshop looking at his work with Linguist and cultural activist Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún.

Igbo Poet 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Amarachi Attamah is a performance poet, broadcaster, author and promoter of African and Igbo culture. Now performing and writing solely in Igbo, her first full Igbo collection is ‘’Akuko Ifo Nnem ochie koro m” (Folktales my Grandmother Told Me). She has three further poetry titles. As an advocate for Igbo language and culture, she performs in schools, encourages pupils to learn the language, organises festivals and runs initiatives about Igbo. Her poem will be translated under the guidance of Joseph Ogbonna Ike.

Hausa Poet 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Alhaji Mudi Sipikin was a poet and a founding member of the progressive independent party, Northern Elements Peoples Union (NEPU) in 1950. Popularly known as Mudi Sipikin, he got the surname from the habit, when he was a clerk to the NEPU progressives party, of answering phonecalls with "This is Mudi sipikin". His poem will be translated under the guidance of Richard Ali.
