Part of: PTC Summer Tour 2017 Norwich: Poems from the edge of Europe - Karin Karakaşlı and Sarah Howe

British Centre for Literary Translation
Norwich

One year on from the UK's historic decision to leave the EU, we welcome a leading poet from Turkey, a country on the very edge of Europe which finds itself central to many questions about Europe - our borders, our values and our identity.

Karin Karakaşlı will read from her latest chapbook, History-Geography, alongside her poet-translator, the award-winning British poet Sarah Howe.

In History-Geography, Karin Karakaşlı explores her anguish for Turkey's silent histories, from the 1915 Armenian genocide to the denial of Kurdish identity today, and her love for its geographies, especially the city of Istanbul where she lives. Sarah Howe’s fresh new versions of Karakaşlı’s poems, made in collaboration with bridge translator Canan Marasligil, offer Anglophone readers a rare chance to experience this vital poetic voice in English.

This event is FREE and open to all. Speakers of Turkish are particularly welcome!

Readings will be in Turkish and English. This event is presented in partnership with the British Centre For Literary Translation.
